Travaglini Gattinara – $32.99
With the rising price of Barolos, Nebbiolo fans might consider other, less well known, DOCGs for their fix. The Gattinara region is north, at the base of the Dolomites – so a bit cooler and less traveled. You will still enjoy the classic characteristics of Nebbiolo – the light, almost translucent red color, floral aromas of roses and violets, and the crisp flavors of cherry + pomegranate evolving to a hint of licorice + cinnamon.
This wine pairs well with lamb or any dish from Italy that might be on the menu – cheeses, tomatoes, pizza or pasta. And far less expensive than a comparable Barolo. The origins of the curvaceous bottle shape might also be a fun topic for a dinner discussion.
