What to drink with fish?
We’re often asked, what is the best wine to drink with fish. We offer some advice:
For SHELLFISH, you’ll want a zesty, vibrant, crisp wine – perhaps a bit of salinity:
- Spanish Albarino
- French Chablis
- Unoaked Chardonnay
- French Muscadet
- Sancerre
- Dry Riesling
- Champagne and Cava
- And if you’re serving butter (lobster), a buttery California Chardonnay or French Chablis would be delicious
For light, lean and FLAKY WHITE fish (seabass, sole and tilapia), you’ll want a light crisp wine, with plenty of acid:
- New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc
- Spanish Albarino
- Austrian Gruner Veltliner
- Dry German Reisling
If the fish, is white but THICKER AND FIRMER (cod, halibut), you can increase the flavor of the wine:
- Viognier
- French Chablis
- Unoaked Chardonnay
For fish with STRONGER FLAVORS (tuna, salmon, swordfish) or a strong sauce, you might consider additional whites or lighter reds
- Vouvray
- most California Chardonnays
- Rose
- Pinot Noir (particularly with salmon)
- Beaujolais
- Some lighter Grenaches
